Trichocereus bridgesii var. Monstrosus (this is a real plant, we promise)

Description:

The Trichocereus bridgesii 'Monstrosus' is a nursery produced cultivar. This species follows a clustering habit that branches at the base. It is a slow growing cactus that takes on a light glaucous green color. It reaches an approximate height of 1’ 4” at full maturity. Each stem consists of short, branching upright sections. This cactus has limited areolas and spines within the basal nodes of the plant. Spines take on a honey to brown color. They typically form groups of no more than four and are rather long (up to 1 ½ - 2 ½ inches). The upper part of the stem is cylindrical, smooth and contains no areolas. It is currently not known as to whether this species flowers.

The Trichocereus bridgesii 'Monstrosus' is an easier species to cultivate. Reports indicate hardiness down to 11°F for short periods. USDA hardiness zone is 10. Requires a fertile, very well-draining soil mixture. This cultivar thrives with a more regular watering schedule than most other cacti. This species requires nearly the same amount of water as a “regular” plant. Provide enough time for the soil to dry out before watering again. Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer (The Cactus King uses a 3/3/3 fertilizer), during the growing season (summer months).

When cultivated outdoors, this species does appreciate full sun. During the summer months in hotter regions, this cactus is susceptible to sun burning. In this instance, it is best to grow them in light shade. For indoor cultivation, bright light and direct sun is required. During the winter months, the Trichocereus bridgesii 'Monstrosus’ should be placed in a cool, bright area. In doing so, you will help your friend enter a state of winter dormancy. Water should be nearly entirely withheld, and the use of fertilizer should stop. If light levels are too low, etiolation can be an issue.
