Adansonia digitata

Description:

Found in the hot, dry savannahs of sub-Saharan Africa. Trees usually grow as solitary individuals. The flowers on the tree are white and large, up to 5in across. This species is found to be among the most effective trees at preventing water loss. The tree tends to grow in sandy-textured soils, but can be found on rocky hillsides or in places where there is runoff. Commonly refereed to as the 'Baobab' tree. The fruit on the tree is edible and is used in products such as smoothies and cereal bars. They are highly nutritious. They are known to live for thousands of years. Our trees are 1yr old grown from seedlings.

Medicinal: A drink is prepared from the fruit pulp which is known as the "cream of tartar". The drink is used to treat fevers, diarrhoea and haemoptysis. The leaves and bark are used in West Africa for their purported anti-inflammatory and anti-diaphoretic properties. They are used as a remedy for urinary disorders and mild diarrhoea. The leaves are used for fevers, to reduce persiration and as an astringent. In the Northern province of South Africa the powdered seeds are given to children as a hiccup remedy. Baobab bark has been sold in Europe under the name "cortex cael cedra" for the treatment of fevers and a substitute for cinchona bark.
