Lithops karasmontana var. mickbergensis

Description:

**EACH 4" POT CONTAINS 1 PLANT**

The Lithops karasmontana var. mickbergensis is indigenous to a small region 7 miles Northeast of Grünau, Namibia. This species is distinguished by the field number C168 (var. mickbergensis). Despite some variability, this plant normally takes on an orange-gray to pinkish-gray color.

The Lithops genus is considered to be constituted of "mimicry plants." Each species exhibits an astounding similarity to the background rocks within their indigenous countries and/or regions. Moreover, they are nearly impossible to locate when not in bloom. Consequently, the species within the Lithops genus are commonly referred to as "Pebble Plants" and "Living Stones." Unbelievably, each species is associated with one specific rock type. Each species occurs in one sole region.

Lithops are partly subterranean. There is only one, single area that is actually exposed to the world above. Lithops employ a system that utilizes a layer of apical tissue that is very rich in calcium oxalate crystals. Those crystals serve as a filter to inhibit and weaken intense sun rays before they reach the plant's thin chlorophyllous layer below. Additionally, this near subterranean growth pattern reduces the need for chemical defences against herbivores.
