The Pachypodium lealii var. Saundersii is likely the easiest and fastest growing South African Pachypodium species. It is indigenous to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Southern Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Swaziland). This succulent is typically found in open, sunny and stoney woodlands. It grows in granite rock crevices on exposed rock sheets.

The Pachypodium lealii var. Saundersii is a swollen, pot bellied stem-succulent. Dormant during the winter months. Keep completely dry when leafless. It produces terminal clusters of large, showy, white flowers. Flowers are tinged with pink to purple on the outside of the corolla (the part of a flower that consists of the separate or fused petals and constitutes the inner whorl of the perianth). Inside of flowers are greenish in color. Flowers are pollinated by moths, so they have evolved into a long and tubular shape. Fruit is a twin, horn-like cylindrical follicle (two separate mericarps). Spreads at a right angle when mature. Fruit is spindle shaped, attenuate at the apex, compressed, glabrous, pale to dark-brown with longitudinal lines along the outside.

Synonyms:

Pachypodium lealii subs. saundersii (N.E.Br.) G.D.Rowley
Pachypodium saundersii N.E.Br.
Pachypodium lealii Welw.
Pachypodium giganteum Engl.
