Tall, columnar cactus that reaches a mature height of 6 - 20 feet. Stems are dark green, have 3 to 5 angles and are 2.5 – 3 inches in diameter. Central areoles have 1 to 2 spines reaching up to 1.5 inches in length. Radial areoles have 6 to 8 spines, reaching up to 1 inch in length.

This cactus' flowers are 5 - 8 inches in diameter with a tubular length of 3 - 6 inches. Outer sepals are greenish-white, inner sepals are pure white while its pistils maintain a creamy white color.

This cactus has nocturnally blooming flowers. Its flowers typically open at midnight and close at dawn. This often attracts nocturnal insects such as hummingbird moths. This cactus' shiny, red fruits are approximately 2 inches long.

This plant can be eaten either raw or cooked. Additionally, its fruit is a type of Dragon Fruit. It is sweet and delicious!
