Aloe vaombe
Aloe vaombe is a Madagascan tree Aloe. This species thrives in full sun, however, it can tolerate light shade. Plants located in the Aloe genus utilize a Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM). These species obtain carbon dioxide at night, photosynthesizing during the daytime with their stoma closed. This allows the plant to greatly reduce water loss. Furthermore, this plant's succulent leaves, stems and the presence of a thick cuticle, has afforded it a time tested ability to withstand VERY dry conditions. For all these reasons, the Aloe vaombe is a fantastic choice for xeriscaping.
The Aloe vaombe is hardy down to approximately 0 degrees fahrenheit (for short periods). If temperatures drop below 0 degrees, this species can become severely damaged. You can help protect your friend by covering her with a blanket or tarp if a cold snap is predicted. Please do not forget to prop up the cover with a stick or pole. If not, you could end up crushing the plant!

The Cactus King's cacti and succulents have gone international! If you ever find yourself in China with a little spare time, head to the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom. It is the largest Aquarium in the world (no big deal, pun definitely intended).
