Manfreda virginica

Description:

Manfreda virginica is a succulent belonging to the Agavaceae family. Between its spotted foliage and striking inflorescence, this species adds an interesting element to those who have xeric gardens. Thrives in full sun. Drought tolerant, needs very little moisture. Used to parched, nearly sterile and sometimes alkaline soils. In other words, the Manfreda virginica is one tough cookie.

The Manfreda virginica has fleshy, dark green, lanceolate (tapering to a point at the apex and sometimes at the base), pointed leaves. At full maturity, leaves can reach an approximate length of 16" within a basal rosette. The foliage is an attractive addition to rock gardens with Prairie Dropseed and Silky Aster.

This succulent's flowers are yellow-green in color. They bloom during the months of May, June, July and August. The 1" flowers exude a similar fragrance to Easter Lilies. Flowers grow loosely on top of a 4' to 6' stalk.
