Opuntia ficus indica 'Burbank Spineless'

Description:

The Opuntia ficus indica 'Burbank Spineless' is a prickly pear cactus that has long been a domesticated crop plant important in agricultural economies throughout arid and semiarid parts of the world. It is a large/bushy or sometimes erect and tree-like perennial cactus. The Opuntia ficus-indica has a woody trunk (1-6 meters high), usually with a large top. The plant's epidermis is green, very thick and waxy. As such, it has an excellent ability to repel water and reflect sunlight.

Spines are inconspicuous, absent or present in only a few areoles (or 1-6 present in most of the areoles on each pad). Spines are typically white, tan or pale brown. They are deflexed and spreading, straight, flattened and subulate.

This species flowers are large. They are normally bright yellow to orange-yellow, but can also be white, bright orange or red. Flowers typically have reddish or greenish centers. The inner perianth segments are sometimes show a tinge of pink. Filaments and anthers are yellow with greenish stigma lobes. Fruits are ovoid to oblong with a low, depressed umbilicus. They are fleshy, juicy and edible.
